Last week we visited Treviglas Academy in Newquay to deliver a session on earthquakes and seismology to Year 9 geography students.

During the visit, we introduced students to a wide range of topics, including:

  • Live demonstrations of seismic recordings using a working seismometer.

  • Exploring how seismic waves propagate through the Earth and how global earthquake data is used to understand the planet’s internal structure.

  • Discussing earthquake activity in Cornwall and how earthquakes are measured using magnitude scales.

  • Examples of seismic signals that are not caused by earthquakes, and what they represent.

  • Career pathways in seismology and some of the recent projects MST has been involved in.

The session provided students with a practical insight into how seismology is used in the real world and encouraged discussion about science, technology, and future careers.

We would like to thank Colette McCann and Charlotte Pollard for organising the visit and for their support in making the session a success. You can also read about our visit on the Treviglas academy facebook page here
